Balanced Literacy is a complete language arts program that uses best practices and is aligned to the elementary curriculum. The program focuses instruction on reading, writing, and working with words. It emphasizes movement from supported to independent literacy learning for children and it focuses on assistance to teachers in implementing effective research-based strategies.
Balanced Literacy reading specialists provide inservicing and work directly with teachers in their classrooms by providing demonstration lessons and coaching.
Edmonton Public Schools also offers a Balanced Literacy Coordinator Training Program that enables out of district educators to inservice and coach teachers in their own district so that teachers can implement Balanced Literacy in their classrooms.
